Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah says he is trying to not get ‘too low with the lows' after what he admits has been a tough season on a personal level.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a stellar breakthrough campaign last year, playing 33 times for the first team despite only making his debut in late August.

He was often picked as the starting defender alongside Virgil van Dijk and won a call-up to an England camp from Gareth Southgate.

He looked to be going from strength to strength after starring in pre-season and starting the first league game of this term, away at Ipswich.

But he was hooked at half-time at Portman Road and has struggled for league minutes since.

In fact, that was one of just three Premier League starts but, after making his Champions League debut in the 2-1 win over Lille this week, Quansah is keen to push on. ‘It was a very enjoyable experience for myself,' he said.

The Liverpool centre back has made just 12 appearances under Arne Slot this season

The youngster began the season in the starting line-up but was substitute at half-time in Liverpool's Premier League opener

‘I have worked so hard for my career and to be able to play in the Champions League at Anfield, it is a dream come true for me. Every game is a learning process. I am not getting too down if I make a mistake or two. I just know I need to learn.

‘It is going to be a long career for myself… hopefully. Try to keep level, don't let the highs be too high and don't get too low with the lows. Temperament is the most important thing for slot777 me or a young centre back, and to learn from the players around me.'

Boss Arne Slot cited Quansah's lack of duel success as a reason for substituting him at Ipswich and fellow defender Ibrahima Konate stepped up to form a lasting formidable duo with the captain Van Dijk.

From starting the season as second-choice central defender, Warrington-born Quansah was soon fourth, with Joe Gomez deputising for Konate when the Frenchman missed around a month with a knee injury. Wataru Endo has also played there.

But Quansah is keen to keep his confidence up and play the long game. ‘I am not going to sit here and say it's easy, it is always tough,' he explained. ‘But it is all about how you prepare, putting yourself in the best mindframe and physical condition.

‘It is not easy when you are not in the team but you need to do everything you can for the team. Keep pushing. I am always looking at my game whether I play good or bad. I am not going to be the "finished article" yet. I am my harshest critic, I have always said that.

‘I like to work on myself. I could name 100 things (to improve) that you guys wouldn't see. So I am just working to be where I want to be in the future. I know it will not happen overnight. It takes hours and hours of work, that is what I am willing to do.

‘But I am very proud (to play in the Champions League). For me and my family. Obviously I couldn't hear the theme tune too much because of the boos! But it is definitely a dream come true. I am trying to keep perspective on it.

‘When things are not going my way, I can look back at nights like this. I will always have that. That will always be under my belt and I am grateful for the opportunity.'

Quansah put in an assured display against Lille, completing 99 of his 102 passes (97 per cent) and winning both duels he contested. He also made more carries (34) than anyone else on the pitch.

Van Dijk, who Quansah openly said he is studying regularly, added: ‘It's a season where Jarell can learn each and every day. He's a fantastic young player and can only get better. He's in a great place to learn.

‘When he gets the opportunity to play, like tonight, he just has to show his qualities and play with confidence. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, because we all make mistakes. He did well.'
